Oilfield Foam Wiper Balls
Wipe pipe and wiper fluid separation make for efficient drilling and cementing. Oilfield foam wiper balls remove drilling mud, cement residue and debris from the inside of drill pipe, casing and tubing, and keep fluids apart during displacement. Merit is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of foam wiper balls. We make them from natural rubber in standard sizes from 3″ to 21″, and we also produce custom sizes.
What Is an Oilfield Foam Wiper Ball?
A foam wiper ball is a compressible sphere pumped through the pipe string. It conforms to the inner wall, pushes residual fluids and solids ahead of it, and acts as a barrier between two fluids, such as mud and cement. Because it is made of natural rubber, it can stretch through float collars, packers and stage tools, then recover its shape and keep wiping.
Why Use Foam Wiper Balls in Drilling and Cementing?
Residue left inside drill pipe and casing can:
- restrict circulation and flow,
- contaminate the next fluid, especially cement slurry,
- cause abrasive wear on pipe and BHA components,
- add non-productive time (NPT) and cost.
A cementing wiper ball run ahead of or behind the slurry helps you get a wiper string, better displacement and more consistent cement placement.

Chemical Compatibility
Merit wiper balls perform well in water-based muds, oil-based muds, synthetic-based fluids and completion brines. For cement slurries, we recommend the semi-rigid (-SRF) type. For acidic environments, specialized formulations are available.
Applications
- Drilling: drill pipe wiping, fluid separation, pressure test isolation
- Cementing: pre-cement casing wiping, cement displacement, multistage separation, liner hanger systems
- Production and pipelines: scale and paraffin removal, pipeline pre-commissioning
- Geothermal and water wells
How to Choose the Right Foam Wiper Ball
- Find the largest ID the ball must wipe and check that it falls within the ball’s wiping range.
- Check the smallest restriction in the string against the ball’s minimum restriction.
- Choose the foam type for your fluid system and well temperature.
- Run at the recommended flow rate: for example, 3–6 bpm for 3″–6″ balls and 6–12 bpm for 7″–12″ balls.
Packaging
Each ball is individually wrapped in anti-static, moisture-barrier packaging and shipped in export cartons.
