A clearer data sheet for a simple, critical tool
MERIT has released Revision 2.0 of the Technical Data Sheet for its cementing foam wiper balls (document TDS-FWB-001, issued 21 October 2026). It replaces Version 1.0 from April 2025 and is free to download.
A foam wiper ball is one of the cheapest items on a cementing job, but choosing the wrong one costs rig time. Too small, and mud film and cement stay on the pipe wall. Too large or too stiff, and the ball can stall at a float collar or stage tool. Engineers need exact numbers to choose correctly, and Rev. 2.0 puts those numbers in one place.
The new edition is a 32-page reference covering specifications, sizing, material science, deployment, performance, storage, safety and ordering.
What’s new in Revision 2.0
- Full size table, 3 in to 20 in. All 18 standard sizes (WP10003 to WP10020) now list actual diameter, typical wiping range and minimal restriction, in both inches and millimetres. 1 in and 2 in balls are available on request.
- Corrected conversions. Every inch/mm value has been recalculated, so the metric and imperial columns now match exactly.
- High-Temperature Rated (HTR) grade. A heat-stabilised closed-cell compound for continuous service from +70 °C up to +150 °C (302 °F), with part numbers for every size.
- Clear temperature limits per grade. Standard foams are rated -40 °C to +70 °C continuous; the HTR grade covers hotter wells.
- Honest chemical compatibility data. Exposure tolerances for water-based, oil-based and synthetic-based muds, brines, cement slurries, acids and alkalis, with a recommended grade for each.
- Step-by-step sizing and deployment guidance, including a troubleshooting table for stalled, early or missing balls.
- Updated references. Test methods are tied to recognised standards (ASTM D1056, D2240, D395, D412, D624).
- Quality credentials. MERIT is ISO 9001:2015 certified (Certificate No. QA/TR/9001/2343, QA Technic).
Four grades, one natural rubber platform
Every MERIT wiper ball is moulded from natural rubber (cis-1,4-polyisoprene). Natural rubber gives very high resilience, so the ball squeezes through restrictions and recovers its shape, and it stays flexible down to -40 °C.
| Grade | Part no. example | Hardness (Shore A) | Continuous temperature | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Closed-cell (standard) | WP10006 | 40–50 | -40 °C to +70 °C | General cementing and displacement, water-based fluids |
| Semi-rigid (SRF) | WP10006-SRF | 50–60 | -35 °C to +80 °C | Heavier wiping, cement residue, oil-based mud, abrasive duty |
| Open-cell (OCF) | WP10006-OCF | 30–40 | -40 °C to +65 °C | Irregular bores, drying and swabbing |
| High-temperature (HTR) | WP10006-HTR | 45–55 | -30 °C to +150 °C | Hot wells above +70 °C |
One honest note: natural rubber swells in oil- and synthetic-based mud. It performs well for the short exposure of a wiping run; for longer contact, the data sheet recommends the SRF grade and a compatibility check.
How to size a foam wiper ball in two checks
A wiper ball is always larger than the pipe it cleans; that oversize is what presses it against the wall. Rev. 2.0 gives two numbers per size that make selection straightforward.
- Wiping range: the pipe IDs the ball wipes effectively. Every ID the ball must clean has to fall inside this range.
- Minimal restriction: the smallest opening the ball can be pumped through and still recover. The tightest restriction in the string must be equal to or larger than this value.
Worked example. A tapered string of 5 in drill pipe (ID 4.276 in) and 3½ in drill pipe (ID 2.764 in), with a 1.000 in restriction in a sub.
| Candidate | Wiping range | Covers both IDs? | Minimal restriction | Passes 1.000 in? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WP10005 (5 in) | 1.75–4.00 in | No (4.276 in is above range) | 0.750 in | Yes |
| WP10006 (6 in) | 2.00–4.75 in | Yes | 0.875 in | Yes |
| WP10007 (7 in) | 2.38–5.50 in | Yes | 1.000 in | Yes, with no margin |
The 6 in ball (WP10006) is the best fit: it wipes both pipe sizes and keeps a margin at the restriction. Also allow for the ball shrinking under high hydrostatic pressure; the data sheet tabulates diameter reduction against pressure.
Where foam wiper balls work, and where they don’t
Typical applications
- Wiping drill pipe or work string clean of mud before a cement job
- Wiping cement out of the string after setting a balanced plug (abandonment or kick-off plugs)
- Wiping the landing string in liner and drill-pipe-conveyed cementing
- Separating mud, spacer, cement and displacement fluid to shorten mixing zones
- Coiled tubing cleaning, horizontal and deviated sections
- Geothermal and water wells, pipeline pre-commissioning and soft-deposit (wax, scale) removal
What they are not. A foam wiper ball is a cleaning and separation tool, not a pressure barrier. It does not replace top and bottom cementing plugs, drill-pipe darts, stage-tool plugs, bridge plugs or test plugs, and it should not be relied on to signal the end of displacement. Rev. 2.0 states this limit clearly, because a correct expectation is part of a safe job.
Made in Turkiye, traceable batch by batch
MERIT has manufactured in İstanbul since 2005 under an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system. Each batch is traceable to its raw material lots and process records, and ships with a material test certificate. Typical lead times for standard sizes are 1–3 working days from stock for small quantities, and 7–28 working days for larger orders. Custom diameters, colours for multi-ball trains and modified compounds are available.
