Cementing / Displacement Wiper Ball — Maximum Casing Drift ID 2.992″ (76.0 mm)
1. Product Description
The Merit Foam Ball for Cementing is a compressible, closed-cell polyurethane foam sphere engineered to wipe drilling fluid and cement slurry from the internal wall of casing or tubing during primary and remedial cementing operations. Its oversized, self-conforming outer diameter deforms elastically to seal against the pipe ID as it travels downhole under pump pressure, minimizing fluid bypass, reducing contamination between spacer/cement stages, and improving mud displacement efficiency. The product is designed as a drillable, single-trip, non-retrievable wiper element and is manufactured under process controls intended to give consistent compression and wipe performance across the specified casing drift range.
2. Application
- Primary cementing — wiping between lead/tail cement slurry and displacement fluid
- Remedial (squeeze) cementing — stage separation and fluid isolation
- Casing and liner cementing operations in vertical, deviated, and horizontal wellbores
- Compatible for use ahead of or behind cement plugs where a low-cost drillable wiper is required
- Recommended for casing/tubing strings with a minimum drift ID of 2.992″ (76.0 mm) and above, per the sizing table in Section 4

4. Dimensional Data — Reference Sizing (Max. ID 2.992″)
The table below lists the governing casing/tubing drift dimension and the corresponding foam ball outer diameter supplied by Merit for this application. Foam ball OD is manufactured oversized relative to pipe drift ID to achieve full-wall wiping contact after compression.
| Casing Size / Weight | Casing Drift ID | Foam Ball Nominal OD |
| 3-1/2″ 9.20–9.30 lb/ft (typ.) | 2.992 in / 76.0 mm | 90 – 95 mm (3.54 – 3.74 in) |
| Governing Maximum Drift | 2.992 in (76.0 mm) | ≈ 92 mm (3.62 in) nominal, ±2 mm |
Note: Casing size shown is indicative of the API drift ID matching 2.992″. Actual OD is confirmed against the customer’s specified pipe grade, weight, and coupling type prior to manufacture.
5. Performance & Quality
